The second International Workshop on the Observatory of Mediterranean Wetlands was organized at the Tour du Valat between 26 and 28 March 2009. A group of 34 participants from different countries and organizations attended the workshop to review and discuss the different steps to start the operation of the Observatory as a monitoring and assessment tool of Mediterranean Wetlands. Among the steps, participants agreed on Observatory mandate and objective, strategy, operational and steering structures, potential users, geographic scope and priority themes to be monitored. Work on indicators is still ongoing. At the end of the workshop, a tentative 3 years work plan has been approved, incorporating suggestions and recommendations from the participants. This work plan will be refined and adjusted by the end of 2009, after the implementation of the needs and expectation assessment planned during the second part of 2009 in MedWet countries.
