Development and maintenance of tools for managing and making available on line spatialised biological, socio-economic and environmental data

Home page of the Camargue-Crau-Alpilles Log

Project leader: Christophe GERMAIN (See the CV)

The aim is to develop user-friendly tools for managing spatialised data that are easy for all to use, enabling monitoring to be better integrated into research activities.

In this context, the main objectives of the project are:

  • Archiving and securing databases over the long term
  • Cross-checking and analysis of databases produced from various different disciplines
  • Combining individual surveys with censuses, with a view to the integrated modelling of population dynamics
  • Make available to other institutions the structure of the individual monitoring of marked animals (SIAM) database so that they can use it for other species.

Issues :

Scientific issues

This project will enable the management of large data sets to be facilitated, particularly for long-term projects which require standardisation and homogenisation of the data. It will provide a major contribution archiving and securing the data from the monitoring of individual animals and from long-term monitoring which constitute one of the assets of the Tour du Valat.

Techniques for integrated modelling of population dynamics are currently developed and will enable different sources of information to be combined (individual monitoring and censuses) in models enabling population trends to be studied in relation to various constraints.

Conservation issues

  • Centralisation and long-term archiving of Mediterranean wetlands data
  • Facilitation of networking among partners and interchange of information
  • Improving the ease of access to data and the efficiency of data management
  • Increasing the number of participants and their involvement in the monitoring through interactivity
  • Facilitating the development of indicators for the condition of wetlands
  • Development of tools for data management.

Economic issues / human activities concerned

  • Creation of monitoring databases for socio-economic activities and their development in the Camargue.
