Management plans are tools whose purpose is to define management objectives and to identify the actions and resources necessary for achieving these objectives. They constitute the planning framework that is applied in the management and development of sites and other geographic areas.
The Tour du Valat was the first nature reserve in France to avail itself of a management plan. It has experience in producing management plans in a wide range of contexts (protected vs unprotected areas), in providing methodological support for the production of management plans, in the direct management of sites, and in the evaluation of management plans and their implementation. The experience acquired is put to use in producing and updating methodological guides relating to management plans, in which there is an increasing emphasis on the “integrated” aspect.
Production of management plans for protected areas:
In France, the Tour du Valat produces management plans for sites belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral (e.g. Domaine de la Palissade, the former salinas at Hyères).
Management plan for the Réserve Naturelle du Lac de Réghaïa (Algeria):
As part of a LIFE Third Countries project, the Tour du Valat is responsible for the management plan for the Lac de Réghaïa Nature Reserve for the Direction Générale des Forêts of the Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Involvement in the management of the Arcelor natural areas (Fos-sur-Mer):
Since 1994 the Tour du Valat has been involved with Arcelor in managing its natural areas, situated at Fos-sur-Mer. The management plan for the site aims to preserve its natural heritage and to promote the sustainable use of its natural resources. This project is undertaken in the particular context of an unprotected site.
Objectives Document, “Marais de laVallée des Baux et Marais d'Arles”:
At the Baux Valley Marshes and Arles Marshes Site of EU Importance, the Tour du Valat is involved, at the request of the Bouches-du-Rhône Chambre d’Agriculture, in drawing up the operational section of the Objectives Document for the site.
