Technical transfer unit for Mediterranean lagoons

The objectives of the Mediterranean lagoons transfer unit are:

  • To collect and make available information on the various aspects of lagoon management.
  • To promote sustainable management through developing and applying favourable local policies, providing advice and assistance to managers and users of lagoons.
  • To evaluate results and collaborate in the activities of the national action plan.

The main tasks of the Unit are the followings:

  • Information collection and make them at disposal
  • Creation of a skills directory, a bibliographic database and a monthly newsletter «La Lettre des lagunes»
  • Promotion of sustainable development of Mediterranean lagoons
  • Awareness raising among the general public (web site, world Wetland Day, conferences, teaching tools)
  • Training for managers and facilitation of the transfer of knowledge
  • Publication of a quarterly scientific article (e.g. “The toxic phytoplankton of Mediterranean lagoons: from monitoring to research”)
  • Animation of the Lagoon Managers Network with thematic activities (e.g. “the exotic animal species of our coastal wetlands: impact and management”), training courses
  • Support for local government bodies especially through the involvement in steering committees (management of sites, NATURA 2000, ad hoc)
  • Support for economic players in their approach to sustainable management (fishermen, shellfish farmers,…) through the production of syntheses, leaflets on sustainable practices and support in organizing public events
  • Awareness-raising among decision-makers and elected representatives (World Wetland Day, production of leaflets, booklets, …)
  • Collaboration in measures at the national level
  • Participation to thematic groups (e.g. National Wetland Group)
  • Contribution to the National Wetland policy
  • Support of the implementation of the Water Directive.
