The MedWetCoast project in Morocco has launched the process to prepare a national wetland strategy. The Tour du Valat has been requested to undertake the coordination and supervision of the national scientific team in charge of drafting the strategy, as well as to provide the position of national coordinator.

The aim of the project as to provide a technical assistance to the national team of the MedWetCoast project in Morocco for the development of the national wetland strategy.

Issues :

The development of a national wetland strategy or policy is an engagement of the Ramsar contracting parties. Such a strategy should be based on a sound analysis and diagnosis of the wetland resources and their biodiversity, the legal and institutional frameworks, as well as the socio-economic aspects. The strategy is implemented through an action plan which defines the priorities and timing for the activities proposed, as well as the actors involved.


Activities:

  • To produce a diagnosis for the biodiversity and for the socio-economy of Moroccan wetlands
  • To produce a draft national wetland strategy and a draft action plan
  • To present these drafts at a national wetland workshop at the end of 2006.
